Usaama’s Story

There's the King!
Even in the most difficult circumstances, there’s always something we can do to help each other and make a difference. To raise money for Merton Giving, I completed a 30k three-day run around my 30th Birthday. Not only was my belief reaffirmed but the fundraiser surpassed my expectations. I thought my £1,000 target would be a challenge so I was over the moon when I found out we had actually smashed it. A highlight from my runs was dressing up as a King and having kids scream, "There's the King!" as I ran by. It's this kindness and generosity towards the most vulnerable residents in our borough which makes Merton.

Caroline’s story

My 2.6 challenge in 2020
I took part in the #twopointsixchallenge as part of the Chamber Champs team. It was my opportunity to run further than I have before - 26 miles over 6 days. Not only did I achieve my goal, but it spurred me on to continue my fitness drive during lockdown and beyond and I’ve continued to jog several times a week. I’ve got fitter, discovered new local areas and had me time to clear my head. The icing on the cake was raising an amazing £1,900. A real win:win.

John’s story

A family affair
With a young family, and little spare time, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to help with the distribution of food as I’d hoped during the pandemic. Some friends decided to get creative and raise funds for those in most need locally. This was the perfect opportunity for me to get my boys out of the house, at times that suited me, to run, and raise funds and awareness of the need locally. We felt great and the fundraising was far more successful than expected... Perhaps I wasn’t alone in wanting to help but not knowing how?

Business Giving Stories

How businesses have made a difference to local lives
Image

Local solicitors, Peacock and Co named Merton Giving their charity of the year for 2020. The business supported Merton Giving through a range of activities including will writing activity, where they exchanged their professional skills in return for donations, charity collections in their two local offices as well as taking part in Merton Giving Week for two years running. The team dressed up in their finest to celebrate Funky Friday and donated gifts in the 2020 Food and A Gift For All campaign.

“We are thrilled to be supporting such a vibrant, growing local charity and to see its impact in our community. Our association with Merton Giving is something that Peacock & Co are proud of – and we are keen to spread word to others within our business. Giving back feels good, but it is a social responsibility that we can all strive to be better at too.”

Katherine Carroll, Partner. Peacock & Co.

Merton Giving connected local business, Ry, with Age UK Merton. They’ve supported the charity for a second year in a variety of ways involving time as well as donations. They’ve put smiles on faces of the local community by arranging deliveries over the Christmas period and have made contributions to their festive lunches.

“We were introduced to Merton Giving and in turn were introduced to ways in which we can be more involved and give back to the local community. This is something that is daunting without a central hub of contacts and information. After a discussion on what Ry was able to offer as a company the team at Merton Giving was able to provide us with a list of options that suited our inputs and passions within our community.”

Merton Giving Week 2020

Food and A Gift For All

Merton Giving Week returned for its third year in November 2020. In the run up to the festive season, we wanted to build on the heart-warming community spirit we’d seen through the year. The focus for the campaign was to support local people experiencing food insecurity. We also teamed up with local charities to encourage people to donate a gift hamper to those less fortunate and facing the festive period alone.

Over £2,500 was raised to help those in our community facing food insecurity and over 125 gift hampers were donated. Thanks to the generosity of Wimbledon Foundation and their donation of Wimbledon gifts, we were able to provide a gift for all to over 550 vulnerable local residents.

2.6 Challenge

Merton Giving took part in the #TwoPointSixChallenge - a campaign to help charities recoup some of their income lost by the cancellation of fundraising events.

People took on the challenge for us with great enthusiasm. They ran, jogged, rowed, cycled, performed press-ups, push-ups, leg lifts, golf ball challenges and even shaved to help us raise money. The challenges raised over £6,000.

We're thankful to everyone who has taken on a challenge in aid of Merton Giving and for all those who have supported the challenges through your generous donations and sponsorship.
